Last year, Honor, the Huawei sub-brand, entered the Chinese flagship killers league with Honor 8, a smartphone that did not have much to envy to the high-end more consecrated, but with a much higher price tight. It has not yet been an exact year since the presentation of Honor 8, but the Chinese firm has not wanted to wait to unveil what will be its new flagship for this year.
Honor 9 is already official and comes with many changes that only make their position within that group of smartphones that want to be an affordable alternative to the high end. The Honor 9 becomes more powerful, expands its memory, improves its double camera and much more.We tell you everything that has changed from Honor 8 to Honor 9.
Glass design with a fingerprint reader that changes position
At a glance, the design of Honor 9 follows the wake of the first model, at least as far as materials are concerned. We have a back covered with reflective glass and metal frame around, although in this case the back has curved on the sides, which should improve ergonomics.
The two models remain practically the same size, although there is a slight change in the diagonal of their screen. Honor 8 had a FullHD panel of 5.2 inches, but in this case Honor 9 adjusts its diagonal to5.15 inches, a change that should be barely noticeable in daily handling.
However, even though the Honor 9 panel is a bit more compact, the overall device size grows a couple of millimeters high: This is because, as we have seen with the Huawei P10, the signature has Moved the fingerprint reader to the front, right under the screen.
Personally I think the best location since it allows to unlock the mobile when we have it on the table. In addition, since the front still has some prominent frames, at least in this way makes better use of that space.
A more complete double camera, now with x2 zoom
As it could not be of another form, the Hono 9 continues betting by a configuration of double camera, but with changes. The clearest is the resolution, going from the 12 + 12 megapixels of Honor 8 to the 20 + 12 megapixels we saw in the P10 series of Huawei.
Again, we have an RGB sensor (20 MP) and a monochrome (12 MP) sensor that come together to create sharper images, but in this case the approach unifies several systems: phase detection, laser and contrast. On the other hand, Honor talks about a hybrid x2 zoom , a detail that reminds us a lot of Apple’s proposal on the iPhone 7 Plus, although we will have to see what they mean with that hybrid.
Another point where there are improvements is in the video. Now Honor 9 will be able to capture videos in 4K resolution, while Honor 8 would capture them in FullHD. Of course, we still have no optical stabilizer. For the front camera Honor continues betting by the 8 megapíxeles, but now with a more luminous lens.
Honor 9 vs. Honor 8: Comparison of specifications
If we raise the hood of Honor 9 there are also many improvements, starting with the processor, which is now a Kirin 960 eight-core GPU Mali G71 . It is the same configuration that we found in the Huawei P10, but if you look at the memory, Honor 9 goes one step further.
The terminal will be available in three different versions, the most basic will offer 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, just as we saw with Honor 8. Just one step higher we have the variant with 64 GB and 6 GB of RAM and last The 6 GB version of RAM with 128 GB of storage.
In the connections section, Honor 9 maintains the minijack and has a USB-C port to charge its battery, which now rises to 3,200 mAh and recharges quickly. It also maintains the NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi dual band connectivity. In the software we have Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.1.
Finally, we leave you with the table of specifications comparing both models. What do you think of the new Honor 9? Is he a worthy successor?
