It’s called OnePlus 5, we skipped 4. One will call your attention but it has its explanation: in the Asian markets the number four is related to bad luck. In Mandarin, it is pronounced similarly to the word ‘death’. Be that as it may, another year, another OnePlus arriving to annoy the high end. We will present it with as much detail as possible allowing us a week of research on it.
This OnePlus 5 goes directly to replace the OnePlus 3 and its version 3T, so they will last in the market what they have to last the existences of a telephone that to this day continues being attractive and complete. Obviously the new one is more interesting in everything, in exchange we will have to pay something more for him.
Delicate theme of the price, OnePlus is maturing in the market while the chant of “flagship killer” is blurring : if you want very modern and powerful components, you have to pay them. Fortunately, the relationship between specifications and price remains among the most competitive. Let’s meet you on video:
OnePlus 5 vs 3T, technical specifications
It has only been seven months since the brand caught up with the OnePlus 3T, so there is no revolution in this new generation, in fact there are some sections that are quite conservative for 2017. The most important changes are in the double camera And the new Qualcomm chipset :

I would like to be fairly responsible with this analysis, considering that the status of the phone software is not fina , there are important updates in development that are coming and that will improve things. This implies that I will update things in successive weeks, and possibly some valuation does not correspond with what they are really going to sell.
Thinner and curved, similar to others?
Continually in proportion, OnePlus has decided to create its thinnest phone
Obviously it looks like other phones, it is well to place the main elements in the same place, but the reality is that in the hand is not so similar, by textures, shapes or colors. It is already in each one to assess if you want a phone that is very different or more similar to the apple. We should also stop to think about how a different phone is made at this point in the movie, without being a giant like Samsung or Apple.
Could they have been placed in another position? Possibly, but who knows if it is technically the best location for a sensor with dual camera, which takes up more room inside a phone. With the design of the antennas we could say the same, being at the ends is better for the reception, although I like the straight lines of the OP3 more.
OnePlus says they have worked on up to 100 prototypes to get here and honestly I do not think that the Chinese group that makes the OnePlus 5, and its twin Oppo R11, need to look like nobody: they sell many phones with enough personality and technology of their own. I firmly believe that they are not in the position “typical Chinese company that wants to look like X”.
Similar at first glance but very different when you hold it in your hand. The OnePlus 5 is not a clone of the iPhone 7 Plus.
With respect to the OnePlus family, here is an interesting evolution in comfort of use, since in the same size of screen we offer a thinner and curved device. You know, it fits better in the hand, especially if you do not have them very big. Between its dimensions we emphasize the 7,25 millimeters of thickness.
Having spent a few days with the Galaxy S8 conditions the valuation, the OnePlus is a more mature and sophisticated phone but it does not look like a futuristic concept as in Samsung’s case: the frames are small but they are there, there is no special curvature, no proportions Of novel screens.
For its conception a unibody aluminum body has been used, which always appears ‘painted’ in two tones: if we look at the side of the phone we find a lighter horizontal line that gives way to a darker one that extends all over the Rear. Our unit is in Midnight Black color – 128GB – but there is another more clear called Slate Gray, with 64GB.
We do not forget that the ‘ Alert Slider ‘ is again present, a physical button that allows us to switch between three profiles without having to touch the screen of the phone: completely active, only important notifications, or not enter any.
A critical part of the phone, or in which it lags behind the cock , is water resistance. The OnePlus 5 is not certified as such, it should lack something to not pass the tests, but I’ve wet enough to clean it, knowing that the brand told me that it is much more resistant than they can advertise (practically submersible, Although it would not play with the possibility).
In the front the protection is put Gorilla Glass 5, while in the camera we find a sapphire coating that leaves us quite calm, since it is a very exposed area – payments, the NFC is there -. Again we find a hump, which being in a corner leaves the phone somewhat lame to place it with the screen up.
One way to add resistance and personalization is with the different official housings that are offered
In the small details often the difference makes us interested. We can highlight that they have painted black leds of notifications and navigation buttons, so that the front is completely black: when they are off they do not look. The ports are also painted in the same color.
The antennas also change the color according to model, to go to match with the back of the terminal. In the case of Midnight Black these color details make a really attractive terminal, and we are happy that this tone released as exclusive in the OP3T, here is a basic option.
Design rating: remarkably high. I would almost say outstanding, for its completion and clean lines. But there are more expensive phones that have marked important differences in design and strength – Xiaomi, LG, Samsung -, that is why I consider that we must leave a gap for the margin of improvement. OnePlus continues to bet on a phone that appeals to everyone, who earn points in person.
The same screen AMOLED
Very conservative are with the resolution of the guys of OnePlus, in the 3T seemed normal, and in a way I still consider that a Full HD panel is quite valid. But being realistic with what is cooked in the market, in a high range what is offered, already, is much more resolution: QHD panels.
I understand that OnePlus, like Oppo, are not very friendly to upload at any price, prefer to keep the option to have a good AMOLED panel and stay in that resolution. I am clear that asking for a higher level component would raise the final price of the whole, and we can say that the big investment is already made with the Snapdragon 835.
The other reason to stay in Full HD has logic is efficiency , a phone will always work better at a moderate resolution, both in the system and in special applications. The excuse had more weight last year, with a Snapdragon 835 and seems to move more resolution is not so worrying, although if we look at Samsung, its way to get efficiency is playing down resolutions.
Entering details of the screen, then say we have the same 5.5 inches on its diagonal and the widescreen ratio is 16: 9 . The screen looks great on the outside, it has the same double polarization layer as the OnePlus 3T.
Curious, we have a screen of normal proportions but OnePlus transmits that will play with elongated dimensions
No, in OnePlus they do not aim at the game of stretching the phone that LG and Samsung have entered, and it seems like Google likes it for their next Pixel. To me, that I have tried in detail that option, convinces me. As a curiosity comment that OnePlus is interested in playing with longer screens , but this time they have not arrived in time.
The screen is flat, does not condition the design of the phone in any way, but on its sides is finished with a curvature type 2.5D. It is fair to comment that the front protection of it is Gorilla Glass 5 – GG4 in the OP3T – and I find no malfunction in the tactile recognition.
I am a user of OnePlus 3T, so I am able to see if there are changes in them, despite the specifications. To my sincerely I think something better in calibration, besides having secured the support of the color space DCI-P3 , an option that Apple released in the world of smartphones with the iPhone 7 and will be valued by professionals of the image.
Screen rating: remarkable. I am neither defender nor enemy of the Full HD at this point, I value that the panel is AMOLED and of quality, each one that raise or lower this note according to his tastes and needs.
Same fingerprint reader
Under the screen, there is the fingerprint reader embedded in a kind of button, which is not. It is a ceramic surface that is durable and comfortable to operate. It is very fast – 0.2 seconds – and reliable, as it was in the previous model. I like the system that is one of the few that allows you to unlock the phone with the screen off .
835 Snapdragon and 8GB of RAM
This is the main value of the phone, choose the best chipset and more complicated to get from the market. It adorns it with lots of good components, but clearly the Snapdragon 835 is the star of the new OnePlus phone.
Identity in OnePlus: offering the best Snapdragon of the season
Noticeable? I already mentioned it in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S8 + and its new Exynos, the most modern chipsets are left over and the practical improvement, now, regarding last year’s models is not very big. I firmly believe that the main improvement comes hand in hand with efficiency, as we will see in the section on the battery.
Vale, in the benchmarks yes it is noted, but its power is something that we will notice with the passage of time, with the optimizations and with the arrival of more demanding applications. In the OnePlus 5 everything flows, we must consider is paired to a Full HD screen, that is something considerably simpler for the latest Qualcomm.
How much does the previous generation improve?
I’m not very friendly with the benchmarks, but I invite you to see how it advances all its Android partners: its eight cores are faster and modern, with 10nm technology; Also the Adreno 540 is between 25 and 30% faster than the previous generation.
Kryo cores run at 2.35GHz, according to Geekbench and other proven tests, the new chipset is 26% faster than the Snapdragon 821 in single-core activities, while multi-core operations the increase is almost 60%.
No warm-ups and strange operations, we could say that it is quite optimized to be a non-final version of the software.
No phone with more RAM
Not only do we have lots of memory, it’s also very modern: UFS 2.1 and LPDDR4X
Someone has been teaching the duck around, but this OnePlus 5 debuts with 8GB of RAM – there is a variant with 6GB -. Not only is it a giant quantity, it is also very fast and efficient to have chosen the type of memory LPDDR4X .
Why such memory? In a system as flexible as Android is always welcome, the resources that absorb a lot, and have many things at the same time open. I think this is one thing that opens a very good future for the phone, will assimilate well future Android updates.
128GB of memory
Another sign of identity in OnePlus is to offer a lot of internal memory, have been doing so since its appearance and do not charge us an outrage for it, so it’s a point to keep in mind if you are interested in having at least 64GB for storage. Of course, there is no way to expand it with cards.
There are two versions that involve a change in RAM: if you choose the most competent model, you take 128GB and 8GB of RAM; If you choose 64GB, the RAM drops to 6GB. In OnePlus they presume that the storage modules are type UFS 2.1, such as those of the latest generation Galaxy S. Also the ROM is faster.
A top in connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0
The high-end phones in our market do not usually have Dual SIM support: OnePlus always takes it into account
The Snapdragon 835 comes with Bluetooth 5.0, with aptX and aptX HD support. We have talked about it in more detail, but in short we have much more range and speed, in addition to opening the doors to connect two headphones. The latter is not yet implemented by OnePlus, but I think it will come.
There is nothing missing in this OnePlus 5: ability to hook up to 34 GSM networks – there are those that interest us – with maximum connectivity of the type ‘ LTE Cat 12 ‘, or what is the same: 600Mbps in downloads, up 150Mbps uploads. There is also NFC and WIFI 2×2 MIMO, which is twice as fast as a OnePlus 3T.
The reversible connector is USB Type-C, but still 2.0. Finally we can say that the phone we can put two SIMs (Dual SIM, dual standby), is another common part of the Chinese brand, which is not usually found on high-end phones, sure that there are many people who will value positively.
Curiously, the phone has the latest Snapdragon 835 but does not have the fastest Qualcomm modem capable of supporting ‘Cat 16’ networks, it will be interesting to go deeper into this topic. Raymond wong
Assessment of the internal hardware: registration. What we have to stay is that we have a phone for a while, as soon as OnePlus strives to upgrade the equipment, we can have a high-end phone to receive anything in the next two years.
New vibration motor
Yes, it is not an aspect that weighs heavily in the analysis of a telephone, but I like that it is well taken care of. Once tested the Galaxy S8 or iPhone 7, I realize that in OnePlus there was room for improvement: my 3T made more noise than vibration, it was a little rough.
The new phone implements a higher quality vibration motor, it is noticed when putting it at a lower level, so that it notifies you and does not know the neighbor, or when receiving responses – haptics – in the interaction with the screen. They have achieved this with an engine that can be configured in 3 levels, with up to 5 working patterns.
Greater autonomy with less battery
It’s funny but it’s like that, since they wanted to create the thinner OnePlus . The new design of the phone leaves less space for the battery, which stays at 3,300mAh of capacity, a decent figure for the type of phone, but lower than we already had in the OnePlus 3T: 3.400mAh .
Better components and greater software optimization offer us a more capable phone
The reality is that this phone is more modern and better designed as the autonomy grows by up to 20%, according to OnePlus. According to my experience, and the one-year daily use of the OnePlus 3T, I can say it’s something like this: making identical use always lasts the same or longer than your older brother.
Having more autonomy is achieved thanks to the new Snapdragon 835, its 10nm manufacturing technology consumes 40% less than that used in the previous Qualcomm chipset (14nm). It also helps the LPDDR4X RAM, more efficient , which consumes 20% less power.
To put a practical test, it should be said that with ease, OnePlus 5 can be slightly more than nine hours with the brightness put in medium level by playing a 2K video.
The fastest load
In this there are few rivals, since OnePlus invented this of the Dash Charge, with elements suspiciously similar to those used by Oppo, there is no phone that charges faster and more securely.
Very fast and secure upload, but have forgotten the wireless option
In half an hour of loading with ‘ Dash Charge 2.0 ‘ you have the phone ready for practically a day of use. It is characterized by using a system that is not only interesting for speed, we also like the possibilities it gives you to keep using the phone in a demanding way while charging : play, watch video or navigate GPS is done without major problem. Do not lower the load current – 5V 4A – as other solutions would do to avoid heating.
Valuation of autonomy: remarkable. The phone is still as valid for a day, its internal hardware is very efficient. Apart from specifications, its fast charge is unrivaled. If you were looking for a phone with a lot of autonomy, this is not the best option, but one of the most balanced by size.
Two eyes see better than one
The main barrier for a very demanding user not to settle for a OnePlus and think about spending more, I think it’s the camera. Knowing that they have invested in creating a dual camera solution based on Sony sensors, sustained with its own software development and the help of the DxO guys (this may be more advertising than effective). It’s enough? Let’s know a little more.
Next to the Snapdragon 835 processor this is the most important bet of the Chinese brand in this phone, and what makes the product more expensive. Jump to the double camera with the solution with more megapixels known in the market, something that does not have to be a good thing, but there is the data.
The configuration looks exactly the same as the one that premiered his cousin Oppo R11, that is to say, two sensors with 16 and 20 megapíxeles in which the first one makes of main camera, the second one, of camera “tele”. More concretely they are like this:
- IMX 398 , 16-megapixel sensor associated with a 27-millimeter lens with aperture f / 1.7
- IMX 350 , the 20 megapixels go to a TV with a lens f / 2.6 and 37 millimeters
We Will later talked about the dual cameras and the different paths that manufacturers take: in this case the idea is very similar to Apple, ie the main camera has more quality and the second is used to help you in Computer photography, or when we need to bring something closer.
Here are some examples that help us understand the different format offered by the two cameras, the 16-megapixel camera is the one on the left and the 20-megapixel camera is the one on the right. I leave a gallery for you to check to normal size the quality.
The main camera is better in photo and video, much of the fault hasthe lens with more aperture : it captures 34% more light than what it achieves in a OnePlus 3T. The camera is also faster booting and focusing, stabilizes better, and the quality is almost always remarkably high, by definition and colorful (sometimes the software is aggressive in the treatment of results). I especially like the close or macro shots.
As I teach you in some of the samples, there are quite strong things in image quality, without a noise important for light conditions, but the reality is that you have to work hard enough for something exceptional. If you are looking for the camera of an iPhone or a Galaxy S, it almost always comes out very easy, this is not the best phone.
In all modes of operation it is possible to change at any time between the two cameras, I leave you examples of the same scene with the two sensors, also in the videos I share. They baptize the change between them as ‘1x’ or ‘2x’ (actually 1.6x), and it is possible – but not advisable – to digitally stretch to ‘8x’.
Sony sensors promise a lot, there is room for improvement to get better things in the future, but right now we do not have a configuration that drives us crazy, although it is better than what they already had. We have to add to this issue the partnership with the people of DxO, specialists in analyzing sensors and objectives, that will help to make better use of the hardware.
A manual mode under conditions
The new Pro mode is great, for moments when we can stop to touch parameters, it is very welcome: it lets us touch ISO, white balance, shutter speed, focus and modify exposure . The photos that appear in the article, not the gallery, are made with this mode.
On the screen it shows a useful histogram and it is possible to record in RAW (the images that I share are slightly retouched in Snapdseed from them). For the most demanding or specific uses, you can save two parameter settings.
Portrait mode, in beta
The portrait mode is what you imagine, giving greater detail to a closer area such as a face, leaving the background with an attractive depth of field, what some call bokeh. For this the two sensors are used, obtaining the focal separation between faces and stage.
We really like that a company like OnePlus goes directly into computer photography – the software is its own – something that even LG has not considered with its double camera bet. We have enough to prove this way, and we know that updates are coming up, but the current results are pretty decent.
As is usual in these modes that bloom in our mobile phones with aspirations to cameras, the cut is not always done well or the blurring effect is exaggerated. Problems come when lighting is complicated or the cut is based on complex elements , such as hairs.
How do you record video?
I really like how you record video , in all available formats. It would only require better stabilization to achieve more productive results. The4K mode has a definition according to its name and a fluidity of 30 images per second.
If what we want is something less gross and more fluid, we can go down to a very useful 1080p at 60 images per second. We can also highlight the time-lapse mode in 1080p or slow motion in 720p (120fps). Let’s go with two samples:
The front camera is 16 megapixels , which improves its operation in low light. The ingredients are very similar to the 3T: f / 2.0 aperture lens, 1080 video recording at 30 frames per second, electronic stabilization, selfie flash or auto HDR.
The main change is in the sensor itself, which is now a Sony IMX 371 , instead of the Samsung 3P8SP, which for me likes to perform better under all circumstances. A good solution for ‘autofotos’ and video calls.
Camera rating: outstanding . In general terms and considering that we expect updates, these cameras are better than the OP3T, so you can already have an interesting reference. If things went easier we could say that we are facing a serious alternative to the bigger ones, but it seems a great solution for its price, for a high range.
I want to emphasize that this is an analysis of the cameras, not a bokeh effect. That does not do it with mastery does not mean that the system is enough better than the one of the OP3T.
Very Android in software
I bet on Android phones that are very Android, but, I almost prefer to go back to the iPhone. The approach of Samsung with his last phone I liked a lot, and OnePlus I can not say more than good things, as they personalize just the operating system of Google .
That customization is called Oxygen OS and here is presented in version 4.5, on Android 7.1.1. We must re-comment that what they let us try is not a final version of the system, that implies that they can change things in the interface, also in performance, or in the camera.
Oxygen continues to evolve to be more useful and optimized, and there are no very relevant additions, for better or worse. To be fair I say this because of the absence of special applications that really improve the system, neither services, nor personal assistants. For good, because everything is very clean.
Among the striking things we can point out are “app priority”, which learns the applications you use more and leave them ready for use, unlike those you do not use much. It introduces a reading mode , the possibility of making screenshots extended, new gestures, “do not disturb” within a game mode , and a “secure box” folder in the file browser (accessible with pin or footprint).
Software Rating: notable. Everything Android can be with small additions, good optimization, and a decent personalization possibilities.
The opinion of Wesharethis
Yes, there are Chinese products that can perfectly compete with it, like the high-end Xiaomi in its home market, or the Huawei P in the rest of the world. Similar price, high specs and very careful design, but OnePlus wins them with simpler software, plus Android.
Did I change my OnePlus 3?
I would like to address the followers of the brand, or those who know it well and may have doubts with the arrival of the new phone: if you have a OnePlus 3T, would not change , in practice is quite similar and there is only one obvious change in the Cameras.
With the original OnePlus 3 I thought a little more, but I would not go crazy to invest in change. For users happy with previous models, I think this is a great time to change: I would try to take the top model, to have more life, and why not say it, its black color is very attractive.
OnePlus 5, price and availability
From today, June 22, it is possible to reserve the telephone with a special code, and with direct purchase in selected establishments in the cities where the presentation took place: New York, London, Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam. Helsinki and Copenhagen will have it one day later.
When can we buy the OnePlus 5? As of June 27, from its website
It should be made clear that the Midnight Black color is associated with the version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB for storage. Its price, 559 euros, considerably more than the 479 euros that cost the OnePlus 3T with the same storage capacity.
The Slate Gray version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB will cost 499 euros. The similar OnePlus 3T cost 439 euros.
The price of both versions has risen significantly, and this is dangerous for the terrain on which OnePlus moves. The main cause of this price is in three components: Snapdragon 835, better memory and double camera.
